James M. Coogan - Leo High School '44 at Peace with Christ

























James M. Coogan is home with his Savior after decades of service to all of us. Jim Coogan was a Tall Man who never missed an opportunity to bring comfort, warmth, humor and love to every person who came within his field of vision. God knows what He is Doing and created Jim Coogan with a greater advantage in height that allowed Jim to overlook our weaknesses, petty egos, and sins. Jim Coogan saw well past all of our faults and treated each and every one of us with Christ-like love and affection.

Jim Coogan lived the Leo Motto - Facta Non Verba (Deeds Not Words). Jim Coogan was living proof that Jesus might also have been a dues paying Plumber.

God Bless you Mr. Coogan! You returned the favor for more than eighty years.

On Saturday, August 2nd 2008 thousands of us will honor the memory of Maeve McNicholas at the Playground named in Maeve's Honor and built by her nighbors who love her.

Here is Maeves story which her Mom and Dad wrote:


Maeve McNicholas was born on a cold, rainy day in May, 2002 which was so opposite of what her personality turned out to be. Maeve became our sunshine. She was a sweet, calm baby that grew into an even sweeter toddler. She was extraordinary in ways that are hard to describe to those that didn't know her. She had an amazing capacity to make us smile and always shared hugs and kisses with those she loved. Even those that didn't know her well would comment on her kindness. In March of 2004, our family grew by two with the addition of Maeve's new siblings, twins Billy and Nora. Maeve, who at that time was not even 2 years old, took the major change in her life in stride. She showed little jealousy and constantly gave her new brother and sister kisses. She was going to be the best big sister ever. Our family was on top of the world – little did we know that soon it would change.

From the time she was born, Maeve was a very healthy child. She suffered from relatively few colds and seemed to be spared many of the common childhood illnesses. Occasionally she had episodes of vomiting, but these episodes would be brief. She would get sick for a day and then she wouldn't throw up again for another 6 months or so. There always seemed to be a reason. She ate too much junk or she was at the babysitters with another child that just got over the stomach flu, etc. All in all this probably happened only 3-4 times over a year and a half. There seemed to be no reason for concern.

On July 25th, 2004, Maeve vomited when we got to a family party. We attributed it to car sickness, because she had been in the sun in the car for almost an hour. She then appeared to feel better and played the rest of the day. The next day she vomited a few more times. We contacted the doctor who said to monitor Maeve’s condition and call back the next day if she wasn't better. She got worse during the night so we brought her to the doctor the next day. The doctor said to take her to the ER to be treated for dehydration. That's all they thought it was - dehydration. When she didn’t “perk” up in the ER, they decided to keep her overnight for observation. Soon after, she had a seizure and then a few minutes later another one. Maeve looked at my husband and myself and said "It's okay". Those were the last words we would hear Maeve say before they sedated her. A few hours later we were informed by the doctors that there was a "significant" mass in her brain. We still had hope, Maeve had a lot of spunk, we could fight this. After waiting through an agonizing night, we met with the neurosurgeons the following morning. They planned on performing surgery to remove the tumor; however that was not to be. Maeve's condition never became stable and the swelling in her brain, despite the placement of a shunt, caused too much damage. She went to Heaven at 4:37 am on July 29th, 2004, less than 36 hours after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Maeve was only 26 months old.


This disease didn't give Maeve a fighting chance. She lost her battle before she even knew it began. We need to continue to fight this battle for her and for other children and families, so that they may never live through our nightmare. Nobody should ever have to say "good-bye" to their child. Our lives are forever changed. We will always, always ache for her and long to hold her and hear her sweet voice. PLEASE help increase awareness and funding to learn more about pediatric brain tumors.

Happy Fourth of July - American Courage

John McCain: Jerry Garcia Endorses Obama: "I don't think that Slaughterhouse-Five was successful movie material. "



The Grateful Dead has endorsed Senator Barack Obama. From today's Chicago Sun Times, a newspaper as Dead as Jerry Garcia!


‘‘We’re not making plans, but I think we stand at the ready to be of service,’’ Hart says. ‘‘We’re all deeply into this, into Barack Obama and the thought of taking this country back in some shape or form, what’s left of it — it’s probably one thing we can all agree on! So, you bet, I would spend a night with my brothers for that any time, any place.’’

Hart says that he and the other Dead alumni have exchanged ‘‘a few friendly e-mails’’ about doing something more for the campaign, but no firm details have been set. ‘‘That’s all there really needs to be until the moment really comes,’’ he notes.

Weir says the Dead men like Obama ‘‘for different reasons.’’ Mostly, he explains, ‘‘I think it may be the last chance in our lifetimes to get money out of politics, to show special interests the door. It’s also a chance to get younger people involved in politics for the first time in many years; once they’re involved, I think they’ll stay and that’s important because it’s their future being decided now.’’

Weir, who initially supported John Edwards’ presidential bid, adds that he liked what he’s read about Obama’s position on the environment, which is his primary interest. Weir is putting together an ‘‘environmental project’’ that he hopes to announce ‘‘in the next few weeks. I have to get on the phone and see if I can bring some folks on board, and if I can do that then it’ll be time for a roll-out.’’

Hart, meanwhile, is in the midst of a busy summer debuting his new Mickey Hart Band, which includes longtime associate Steve Kimock on guitar, former Meters bassist George Porter, Jr., drummer Walfredo Reyes, Jr., talking drum virtuoso Sikiru, singer Jen Durkin and String Cheese Incident keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth.

‘‘It’s a sizzling band,’’ Hart gushes, ‘‘very powerful. It’s not like a regular rock’n’roll band; it does rock, but it’s very fierce in its rhythmic dexterity.’’

The group has been on the road since early June and plays the inaugural Rothbury Festival on Thursday in Rothbury, Mich., then the Lake View Music Fest on Saturday in Chicago and Sunday at theMilwaukee Summerfest.

Its repertoire includes several new songs written by Hart and Kimock with lyricist Robert Hunter, which Hart says he’s been accumulating in recent years.

‘‘I would say there’s about 16 of them,’’ he says. ‘‘I’ve been saving them up over the years. We’ve been writing — I just didn’t have the band to play ’em. This band was actually constructed specifically to play these songs.’’

Hart — who recently released the ‘‘Rhythm Devils Concert Experience’’ DVD and ‘‘The Mickey Hart Collection,’’ a boxed set of his solo work — hopes to get his new band in the studio some time this year to record the new material.

Founding guitarist and icon the Late Jerry Garcia added these thoughts, 'So we are pretty convinced we don't want to play huge stadiums unless we can play them well.'

Which seems to all but bar the drug happy band from playing for Obama, as the Illinois One Term U.S. Senator plays only to Leni Riefenstahl-like Houses. Undismayed the ever poignant Garcia added:'America is still mostly xenophobic and racist. That's the nature of America, I think.' Which melds nicely with Obama's consistent efforts.

Garcia also noted that' And as far as I'm concerned, it's like I say, drugs are not the problem. Other stuff is the problem. But hey, when you live in Watts, you need a little smack to get by, you know what I mean? You need something soft and comfortable in your life, 'cause you're not going to get it from what's around you. And society isn't going to give it to you.For me, the lame part of the Sixties was the political part, the social part. The real part was the spiritual part. I have all the patience in the world about Sirens. For me it's not a Grateful Dead project, it's a Me project. I mean, just because you're a musician doesn't mean all your ideas are about music. So every once in a while I get an idea about plumbing, I get an idea about city government, and they come the way they come.'

Click my post title for MSNBC - The Official Propaganda Arm of Campaign Obama - for the smarmy punk Rachel Maddow telling Americans what and how to think. Maddow, a particularly strident, squealing, and obnoxious shill, called Senator McCain a liar.

Maddow, most Americans read the papers and can digest the words and opinions of candidates. The problem is that some - a few mind you - viewers might actually believe that MSNBC is not a propaganda apparatus for the DNC and Senator Obama in partricular.

Along with 'edgy' Professor/journalist Rosa Brooks, Rachel Maddow plays Orwellian softball on the words of Senator McCain. Americans could care less what overpaid loudmouths think of any candidate. Maddow is actually doing much to help McCain win the White House, but her earsplitting howls are too much especially when slandering a good man like Senator McCain.

This smarmy punk Maddow along with her fat-assed twin Keith Olbermann are cautionary warnings to all smart and talented youngsters: you could, unchecked by morals, Faith, earnest commitment and patriotism, end up like these two. They are paid oodles of cash, but they are essentially lifeless drones and tools for some bad people.

Rachel Maddow seems an especially bullet-proof punk - it is time that her unchecked oafishness gets called out. Twist a pig's ears and watch it squeal.

John McCain: Obama wrong on Colombia, FARC, Ayers, Dohrn, and American Interests in General





John McCain returned from Colombia and three Americans and a Colombian Presidential candidate held by Marxist FARC terrorists fro six years were freed by Columbia's military with American assistance.

Senator Obama is wrong on America's Free Trade Agreement with Colombia, which is fighting Venezuela's dictator Hugo Chavez for the liberty of South American democracies - Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil are all in danger from Chavez's ambitions for a Marxist Continent.

William Ayers has been and continues to be an influence on Obama. Ayers has a long history with Chavez.

Obama may already be working with Hugo Chavez and the narco-war against Colombia. Colombian troops March 1 nailed narco-guerilla leader Raul Reyes just across the border in Ecuador. In response, Chavez threatened to invade Columbia. Information on a laptop computer found with Reyes' corpse detailed the FARC guerillas'relations with both Venezuela and Ecuador and included a February 28 letter from Reyes to the FARC Secretariat. The letter details extensive FARC relations with the governments of Colombia and Ecuador and includes this item:


"The gringos called for a meeting with the minister to ask him to tell us they are interested in talking about several topics. They claim they new president in their country will be Obama and that these people are interested in their fellow citizens. Obama will support neither Plan Colombia nor the signature of the Free Trade Agreement. In this regard, we replied we are interested in relations with the governments that are on equal grounds and that in the case of the United States, a public statement voicing their interest in talking to the FARC is needed, given their eternal war against us."


As Reyes predicted, on April 10 Democrats in Congress blocked enactment of a free trade treaty with Colombia -- in spite of the fact that Colombian exports are already allowed into the US without tariffs. Obama opposed the treaty, winning denunciation by Colombian president Uribe.



Obama is wrong - he is a Progressive Windsock. Obama is wrong on the Surge; he is wrong on Colombian Free Trade; Obama is dead wrong on Chavez and Senator Obama is wrong for the Office of President of the United States.

Barack Obama has had the wrong tutors ( Tony Rezko, Allison Davis, whose son Cullen is being sued for the wrongful death of three year old Curtis Cooper, Fr. Mike Pfleger, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and the dious couple of unrepentant terrorists Bernadine Dorhn and William Ayers) and he listened to them with rapt attention.

Pay attention to Senator Obama.

Pay attention to John McCain. In the days to come the man who roughed up a Sandinista jefe back in the 1980's* will prove to be more than right on Colombia - just as he has been on the Surge.

"But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever. I don't know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don't know what had happened to provoke John but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."

No punches were thrown and the two sat back down, Cochran said. The man, who appeared ruffled after the confrontation with McCain, was an Ortega associate, but Cochran said he was unsure of his identity.

Flash-forward 21 years. Tuesday, McCain was traveling in Central America and he stopped in Colombia. In 2006 Ortega won his office back after losing a 1990 election.

This morning Associated Press ( AP) told me that I would rather have 'Cue with Slim Barry than Tiger John McCain. Not so. That would be akin to attending a Mahler Series at Chicago Symphony with one who enjoys Theresa Brewer Hits. I have personally witnessed Senator Obama's avian-like nips at the Spartan paper plates at Cousin Willie's St. Paddy's Day Irish Breakfast and at the free buffet at Leo High School Boxing Nights at Bourbon Street.

Barack, quite frankly my dears, eats like Gandhi with the trots 'No, thank you, I have had quite enough - this one seedless grape was wonderful; I am a Muslim and a Hindu and a Christian and a Jew and so are all of you.'

While I have it on the very best authorities, a couple of guys I know, that Senator McCain dines likes the cautionary words of Mammy to Scarlet O'Hara in Gone with the Wind -'eat like a field hand and gobble like a hog!


This afternoon, I learned from my pal, Skinnydipedinacid ( that is a Flemish name I believe) of Ankle Biting Pundits, that AP stepped on it's credibility Johnson with this FABULOUS story!

It appears that AP is indebted to some sponsor Word Nazis and any use of the word GAY is so offensive to them that GAY must be deleted and replace with the word Homosexual.

That ends any references to the

John McCain: AP's Racist Poll- Plays The 'Cue Card!

Empirically speaking, I could see John McCain nailing a greasy brown bag of fried 'listeners,' but I doubt very much that Barack Obama has tried this delicacy.


While many are still deciding who should be president, by 52 percent to 45 percent they would prefer having Obama than McCain to their summer cookout, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Wednesday.

Men are about evenly divided between the two while women prefer Obama by 11 percentage points. Whites prefer McCain, minorities Obama. And Obama is a more popular guest with younger voters while McCain does best with the oldest.

Having Obama to a barbecue would be like a relaxed family gathering, while inviting McCain "would be more like a retirement party than something fun," said Wesley Welbourne, 38, a systems engineer from Washington, D.C.

Party label means a lot, with three-quarters of Democrats picking the Democrat Obama and the same number of Republicans picking McCain, a Republican. Independents are about evenly split.

"John and I would probably have a lot to talk about," said Republican Michael Mullen, 53, of Merrimac, Mass., like McCain a Navy veteran.

One in six people saying they'd vote for McCain prefer Obama as their barbecue guest; just one in 20 Obama backers would invite McCain.

The AP-Yahoo News survey of 1,759 adults was conducted online by Knowledge Networks from June 13-23 and had an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. The margin of sampling error for subgroups was larger.


Another study conducted during the Primary suggests that perhaps racist stereotyping might be at the core of the Poll Conducted by AP.

Another study conducted by scholarly and poetic Byron Crawford points to the fact that Barbecue is a litmus test for white ( boring) and black ( FLAVA!) acceptability concerning the consumption of comestibles al fresco:

While we're not as known for it as Memphis or Kansas City, St. Louis actually consumes more barbecue per capita than anywhere else in the country. It's a fact that I once saw on the infamous Food Network, before anybody goes questioning my statistics. Pretty much wherever you are, you're not that far from either a Super Smokers (former employer of yours truly) or its main competitor Bandanas.

Which is cool.

Up until I was like 15 or 16 I didn't really know shit about white people's barbecue. I had eaten a few rib dinners at places like Applebees, and especially those "riblets" things that used to be all you can eat back in the day, but I didn't really know shit about a pulled pork sandwich, which is like the main feature at white barbecue resturants.

Come to think of it, I might have had one or two of them from the KC Masterpiece restaurant in Creve Coeur, but there's a reason you never hear people talk about it anymore. In fact, it might not even still be there. But the main barbecue sandwich I was into at that point was the infamous rib tip sandwich from this place called C&K.

That's it pictured above via Maxim Online, which once did a feature on it, but you can't really see that in addition to the actual rib tips soaked in copious amounts of barbecue sauce and the oh, so necessary white bread, it also comes with a layer of potato salad in between the tips and the Wonder. The whole thing comes wrapped in a sheet of butcher's paper roughly the size of a Twister mat and is basically impossible to eat as a regular sandwich.

Needless to say, it's arguably the best thing you could possibly eat. Nullus.

But then a regular old cracka-ass cracka pulled pork sandwich is pretty dang good, too. In typical white people's barbecue fashion, it consists of nothing more than a handful of pulled pork shoulder on a hamburger bun - the idea being that if you put anything else on it, it might take away from the taste of the meat, which I've written about before. Some people, especially southerners, have been known to put slaw on them, which I tried once and found to be actually not a bad idea.

If there's an issue, it's that C&K is deep, deep down in the ghetto, far enough that it's really not worth going. John McCain McCain Serves Americans; Obama Serves Himself and Goldman Sachs





























David Brooks has a brilliant bit of investigative journalism in today's New York Times Op-Ed Section.

Brooks picks apart Obama's muscrat dodge about 'small donors' feeding his Machine, when in fact the New Patricians engage in a financial class struggle with Old Dough.

Over the past several years, the highly educated coastal rich have been engaged in a little culture war with the inland corporate rich. This is a war over values, leadership styles and social networks.

Socially liberal knowledge workers naturally want to see people like themselves at the head of society, not people who used to run Halliburton and who are supported by a vast army of evangelicals.

If the Democrats are elected, this highly educated class will have much more say over policy than during the campaign. Undecided voters sway campaigns, but in government, elites generally run things. Once the Republicans are vanquished, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for that capital gains tax hike or serious measures to expand unionization. ( emphasis my own)

Over the past few years, people from Goldman Sachs have assumed control over large parts of the federal government. Over the next few they might just take over the whole darn thing.


Earlier Brooks points out 'The Truth' painted over by the Obama Campaign -

When you break it out by individual companies, you find that employees of Goldman Sachs gave more to Obama than workers of any other employer. The Goldman Sachs geniuses are followed by employees of the University of California, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, National Amusements, Lehman Brothers, Harvard and Google. At many of these workplaces, Obama has a three- or four-to-one fund-raising advantage over McCain.

When he is swept up in rhetorical fervor, Obama occasionally says that his campaign is 90 percent funded by small donors. He has indeed had great success with small donors, but only about 45 percent of his money comes from donations of $200 or less.

The real core of his financial support is something else, the rising class of information age analysts. Once, the wealthy were solidly Republican. But the information age rewards education with money. There are many smart high achievers who grew up in liberal suburbs around San Francisco, L.A. and New York, went to left-leaning universities like Harvard and Berkeley and took their values with them when they became investment bankers, doctors and litigators.

Obama's oily use of Gen. Wes Clark on Meet the Press was the latest example of the Jackassing of a President - the Moveon.org, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, MSNBC script to slip a one term, unvetted, storyboarded. character into the White House.

Muscrat Barack got some yardage from Wes Clark's disparaging and sadly self-serving interview with Bob Schieffer who took Clark to task for his obvious willingness to dance on his own chest of ribbons, like a military Bill Ayers, for a shot at the Vice Presidency. Obama took what he could and characteristically ducked under the pond scum:

Clark's remarks set off a familiar pattern from earlier tussles over criticism: the candidates, Obama and McCain, took the high road while the harsh language was left to surrogates.

Obama, without mentioning Clark by name, said that patriotism "must, if it is to mean anything, involve the willingness to sacrifice."


Obama tossed Wes under the bus with his Grannie, his Real Estate agent Tony Rezko, his Crazy Uncle Jere, and even the unctious Father Mike - It is strange that Obama has not tossed Billy Ayers under the Greyhound, too much money and Lefty Influence I imagine.

It is time for John McCain to open up on Barack Obama. He is a soft target. Drop the ordnance on this cupcake. Tell the Truth on Obama, Senator McCain - He can't handle the Truth!

A senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton has revealed that he recently told friends Mr Obama could "kiss my ass" in return for his support. . . .But his lingering fury has shocked his friends. The Democrat told the Telegraph: "He's been angry for a while. But everyone thought he would get over it. He hasn't. I've spoken to a couple of people who he's been in contact with and he is mad as hell.

"He's saying he's not going to reach out, that Obama has to come to him. One person told me that Bill said Obama would have to quote kiss my ass close quote, if he wants his support.

Way to go John McCain. There is nothing more imporant to the US and the world than an incentive-driven competitive innovation process to produce a better battery. A smaller, ligher, more efficient car battery is key to getting the global economy off its addiction to fossil fuels. And just as the $10 million X-Prize proved to be a powerful incentive for the creation of a non-governmental space ship (and Lindbergh won the Orteig Prize for the first transatlantic airplane flight), so too could McCain’s idea push the edge on battery technology.

There are many ways to incentivize innovation. VC money. Government money. Corporate R&D. Labs (government and private). Serious prize money and well designed contests reward both crowd-sourcing and individual genius kinds of creation.

My only problem with the McCain Contest is that $300 million is probably too much money. It implies government bigness and huge scale. The X Prize Foundation gives out ten million bucks and that seems incentive enough.

But that’s a quibble. Both McCain and Obama have not talked very much about innovation to date. With this $300 million contest for a better car battery, McCain leaps ahead in the debate, even without uttering the word “innovation.”

So Barack, what does innovation mean to you?

John McCain: Obama McGeneral Calls John McCain Phat!





General McPeak ( a Four Star Jerque if you ask me)says that the former guest of the Hanoi Hilton is too fat. Well, Merrill, you can lose fat, but stupid is forever.

Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, the Air Force chief of staff during 1991 Desert Storm, told The Washington Times he and Mr. McCain sat in the same National War College class of 1973-74. Mr. McCain, then a Navy commander, had been released by North Vietnam in March 1973 and arrived at the Fort McNair campus in July.

"We both graduated," Gen. McPeak said of what is considered a ticket-punching step up the ladder to higher rank.

Mr. McCain, a fighter pilot just like Gen. McPeak, was seeking to restart a military career after nearly six years of harsh treatment in North Vietnam.

"He was fresh out of jail, you know," Gen. McPeak said. "Skinny kid. All beat up of course, physically. But quite thin. They weren't feeding him very well in Hanoi. He's done very well at the dinner table in Washington."

Gen. McPeak also said Mr. McCain received special favors when he returned to the U.S.


"McCain was always kind of an exception," Gen. McPeak said.

When told about Gen. McPeak's comments, Mr. McCain's roommate in the Hanoi Hilton was not amused.

"Surely a four-star general can come up with something better than that," said Orson Swindle, a former Marine Corps pilot who, like Mr. McCain, was shot down over enemy territory. "It wreaks of pettiness and sarcasm, and I can't imagine why he can make that kind of comment to imply that John McCain feasts at the Washington establishment."

"It's just disappointing to see someone who rose to four-start rank be so petty," said Mr. Swindle, who is campaigning for the Republican senator.


Well, Merrill, you are with the right crowd now, Stay there. The votes will be as regally slim as your character.

Today Abdon is shilling for Obama again in the Sun Times, while three other reporters Chris Fusco, Tim Novack and Dave McKinney take up the Obama Challenge and point directly to another Chicago Style opportunist with long ties to Kid Hope!

Davis is a 67-year-old lawyer and real estate developer with long ties to Mayor Daley and Sen. Barack Obama, as well as to the governor.

He served on the Chicago Plan Commission and, with his former law firm, Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, was a boss to Obama early in the presidential hopeful's career.

Davis was appointed to the unpaid post on the state pension board Feb. 13, 2003. On July 22, 2004, he recommended that the agency give RREEF up to $100 million to invest. RREEF was already handling $55 million for the board.

The next day, Davis voted to approve RREEF's deal.

In February 2005, RREEF agreed to put Davis on its board. He began working as a paid board member that April, state records show.

In a letter that June, Davis notified the pension board of his appointment and said, "To avoid any potential for, or appearance of, a conflict of interest, I will recuse myself from any vote of ISBI having to do with RREEF II."

That was all he needed to do, according to another pension board member, Illinois Appellate Court Justice Thomas E. Hoffman, who was the board's ethics officer. In fact, Hoffman thought Davis' role "was to ISBI's advantage," according to the minutes of the pension board's June 22, 2005, meeting.

Neither Davis nor Hoffman responded to requests for comment.

The State Board of Investment's executive director, William Atwood, calls Davis' service on both boards "an appropriate thing for him to do.

"The whole purpose of that directorship is to oversee the interest of investors," says Atwood. "Who better to do that than a member of our board?"

RREEF executives also defend Davis' arrangement, issuing a statement that says, in part: "Mr. Davis did not become a director of the REIT until several months after ISBI made its commitments, and no additional subscription commitments were made by ISBI after Mr. Davis was elected to the REIT's Board of Directors."

Siedle, the former SEC lawyer, questions why the pension board would want Davis on the investment firm's board. The state pension system's staff could monitor the investment as well as Davis could, says Siedle, who heads Benchmark Financial Services, a Florida firm. Also, Davis could not pass along any sensitive information to the state about RREEF without violating his fiduciary duty as a RREEF board member, he adds.

"Serving on the two boards simultaneously may create conflicting fiduciary duties and other dangers. . . . I can't see any benefit that would justify the risks," Siedle says.

After leaving his law practice, Davis became a developer, partnering on projects with Rezko. At Rezko's trial, prosecutors said Davis suggested to Rezko that "Million Dollar Baby" movie producer Tom Rosenberg -- a Davis friend who headed a pension-investment firm -- could be hit up for campaign contributions to Blagojevich.

Davis' term on the State Board of Investment expired in January 2007. He continues to serve because Blagojevich hasn't reappointed or replaced him.

I first saw Robert Mugabe in the flesh at a UN Earth Summit in Johannesburg in 2002.

His arrival on the podium was preceded by US defence secretary Colin Powell, who was booed and jeered, and by Tony Blair, who met with similar indignities. Mugabe, on the other hand, was greeted by a tumultuous standing ovation. I wrote it off as a passing fad. At the time, black power fanatics were still pumped up over Mugabe's ethnic cleansing of white farmers, and one assumed their enthusiasm would wear off once the consequences of Mugabe's folly manifested themselves.

Not so. By 2004, Zimbabwe's economy was in freefall and his subjects were growing hungry, but Mugabe was more popular than ever.

No, not in Zimbabwe. His fans were black people elsewhere. He received standing ovations in many African capitals, and at President Mbeki's 2004 swearing-in ceremony.

By then, it was clear that his 'fast-track landreform programme' had not significantly reversed his unpopularity at home, and he had already taken to bludgeoning black opponents and rigging elections in order to stay in power.

His black supporters didn't care. Mugabe was giving the whites hell. Mugabe was therefore a hero. 'Mugabe is speaking for black people worldwide, ' wrote the Johannesburg commentator Harry Mashabela.

One assumed this accounted for the Mbeki administration's reluctance to criticise Mugabe in public. We were told that the situation in Zimbabwe was delicate, and that 'quiet diplomacy' offered the best shot at staving off anarchy. For a while this seemed plausible, but in time it became clear that quiet diplomacy was mostly a cover for covert support. When Western members of the Commonwealth moved to expel Mugabe, South Africa helped block them. South Africa also thwarted attempts to place his atrocities on the agenda at the UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Committee. Meanwhile, the rape of Zimbabwe gained momentum, and Mugabe's popularity swelled to rock-star proportions. Last year, the cocky little psychopath informed an audience of African-American New Yorkers that his rule had created 'an unprecedented era of peace and tranquillity' back home. They gave him a standing ovation.

One understands the wounds of history, but even so one believed there would come a day when Mugabe's militant fans realised their behaviour was restoring the reputation of Ian Smith, who prophesised that Rhodesia would be 'buggered' if the blacks took over.

By the beginning of this year, Smith was utterly vindicated. Eight out of ten Zimbabweans were jobless, and those who had work were screwed anyway, because inflation was 2,200 per cent and they couldn't afford anything. Hospitals and schools were collapsing, factories closing. Millions were facing starvation. In a report for the Sunday Times four months ago R.W. Johnson interviewed a game ranger who said Zimbabwe's hyenas were developing a taste for human flesh, the result of scavenging on corpses 'cast into collective pits like cattle'. He concluded that Mugabe's misrule had resulted in as many as two million deaths -- twice as many as perished in the Rwandan genocide -- and that 'the number is now heading into regions previously explored only by Stalin, Mao and Adolf Eichmann.' It was against this backdrop that the UN's Commission on Sustainable Development met to elect a new leader last Friday. The chair of this body rotates between regions; this year it fell to Africa to make an appointment, and African countries were bent on installing Mugabe's man. Western diplomats initially thought this was some sort of joke, but as the day passed, it emerged that Africans were indeed of the opinion that a body dedicated to fostering development could credibly be chaired by a murderous regime that had reduced a once-thriving nation to absolute penury. The West was dumbfounded. 'Beyond parody, ' said an Australian newspaper columnist. 'Appalling, ' said his Prime Minister, John Howard. 'Preposterous, ' said the American human rights lobby Freedom House. But Africans wangled support from Latin America and their motion was carried.

Obama is being scripted by Bob Mugabe's Cheerleaders. Mugabe is still killing with impunity in Zimbabwe.

Olbermann was heard saying outside the service, "this place is going to hell," because his Washington staff couldn't find ketchup packets for lunch at the Center. An NBC insider claimed, however, "Keith did not have lunch at the Kennedy Center and was not eating on the set because he was anchoring a broadcast."

A rep for Olbermann snapped: "Since whatever you're going to print is an outright lie, you can go ahead and write whatever you want. That's on the record and applies to all future items you might make up."

John McCain seems like the guy who brings over the spare sump pump, when the basement floods - again; he's a guy who joins the fish fry crew during Lent at St. Turibius; the man who drops off non-nose bleed tickets for the Bears/Vikings game, because 'he can't use them;' the gentleman setting up the chairs for the morning and evening services at New Pisgah Church; the authority on indirect heat grilling who slow cooks the ribs without making a federal case of the fact; McCain has the chain-saw when the tree comes down in your yard; the neighbor who quietly lets you know that your 8th Grade Cheerleader,Vickey, was smoking at the Mall and you might want to ask her about the pack Camel Menthols in her Louis Vutton knock-off purse; he walks his cousin suffering from Alzheimer's to Keegan's Pub for a half/half every Sunday; he's the quiet gent doing an extra lap around the rosary in the back of St. Gabe's before he stops by the Our Flag Club for the wide-screen Bears opener party. He's the best guy in every neighborhood.

Keith Olbermann, it is reported, pouted and tossed a tantrum that a Romanoff would have been proud of, in the vain attempt to take Tim Russert's seat on Meet the Press following Russert's sudden and sad death. Imagine not being able to communicate your needs to someone — a frustrating experience that may precipitate a tantrum. As language skills improve, tantrums tend to decrease.

Byron York has a good point - any questions directed to Senator Obama that the shadowy R. Senator from Illinois does not 'feel' like answering is "swiftboating."

It's common to see mentions in the press these days about some "swiftboating" of Barack Obama that is allegedly in the works, or might someday allegedly be in the works, or might someday be thought to be allegedly in the works. While I'm sure there will be some hit jobs on Obama — this is a presidential campaign, after all — this talk seems to be based on a fundamental misunderstanding, perhaps willful in some cases, of the swiftboat episode in the 2004 campaign.

Today, there is a tendency to describe any criticism of Barack Obama as "swiftboating." So far, it's been a pretty effective attack pre-emption device. But it has nothing to do with "swiftboating"; you can't just "swiftboat" somebody. Now, if all of the pastors who worked with Obama when he was a community organizer in Chicago came together to criticize his behavior back then, that would qualify. But until something like that happens, could everyone — at least those not working for the Obama campaign or the DNC — dispense with the "swiftboating" talk?

Meanwhile, Michelle Obama was doing "The View."

Seems to me to paint very stark and competing portraits of two important political wives. Mind you, Michelle Obama has the intellect to equal Cindy McCain's outreach. But the fact is that this isn't where the Obama campaign gurus wanted Mrs. Obama to go. It's a pattern with Democratic message people when it comes to our nominee's wife. . . . Michelle Obama has previously earned very critical reviews around here for her impolitic statements, so I was pleased she did "The View" to round off edges that appeared early on in moments on the trail that were beyond abrasive. But at the same time I wondered why this couldn't have been accomplished in a manner that was less "Leave It To Beaver," illustrating Mrs. Obama's passions and her purpose instead. I can't be the only one sensing that the Obama camp is having a Theresa Heinz Kerry, Hillary Clinton moment, telegraphing they're uncomfortable with yet another strong spouse who might scare middle America and doesn't know quite what to do about it. But reverting to traditional stereotypes never seems to work, because it doesn't fit the woman. It's also not very original or creative, instead a throw back. That's what was wrong with "The View" appearance yesterday. It was Michelle Obama airbrushed.

Juxtapose that against Cindy McCain dressed down in Vietnam, then talking about Burma's disrespect for human rights, and you have quite a contrast.

Authenticity meets image concoction. First lady auditions are ugly.

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at
occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which
swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling
along the house-tops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the
lamps that struggled against the darkness. Through one of the obscurest
quarters of London, and among haunts little loved by the gentlemen of the
police, a man, evidently of the lowest orders, was wending his solitary
way. He stopped twice or thrice at different shops and houses of a
description correspondent with the appearance of the quartier in which
they were situated, and tended inquiry for some article or another which
did not seem easily to be met with. All the answers he received were
couched in the negative; and as he turned from each door he muttered to
himself, in no very elegant phraseology, his disappointment and
discontent. At length, at one house, the landlord, a sturdy butcher,
after rendering the same reply the inquirer had hitherto received, added,
"But if this vill do as vell, Dummie, it is quite at your sarvice!"
Pausing reflectively for a moment, Dummie responded that he thought the
thing proffered might do as well; and thrusting it into his ample pocket,
he strode away with as rapid a motion as the wind and the rain would
allow. He soon came to a nest of low and dingy buildings, at the
entrance to which, in half-effaced characters, was written "Thames
Court." Halting at the most conspicuous of these buildings, an inn or
alehouse, through the half-closed windows of which blazed out in ruddy
comfort the beams of the hospitable hearth, he knocked hastily at the
door. He was admitted by a lady of a certain age, and endowed with a
comely rotundity of face and person.

"Hast got it, Dummie?" said she, quickly, as she closed the door on the
guest.

Now here is Steven Webber, a self-absorbed Hollywood dabbler. Can't act; so he is a political activist. Now, he sure as hell can't write and so Arianna Huffington has him on the payroll shilling for Barack Obama.

Now get a load of this!

Change is seeping into our consciousnesses and Hope is entering our lives like amber rays dispelling the murk of a drugged sleep, the one which we endured so helplessly, so long.

The movement headed by Obama is becoming an unstoppable juggernaut, fueled not by his leadership alone but by the gathering momentum of those individuals who feel the totality of the movement's righteousness within them. Obama is the face of the movement; the people are the movement.

And while we are relishing our Obasm, we must nonetheless be aware of the opposing forces who peer jealously across the widening breach, who are becoming even more embittered, even more determined to prevent this movement from succeeding. Starting from its warped, hardened kernel of an ideology, the Bush/Neo-Con jihad on democracy has been nothing less than catastrophic, a global socio/geopolitical plague. And it's not just the obvious villains we have to be concerned about. There are the appeasers in our midst, the DINO's who continue to reward Bush's treachery with unimpeded funding for the disgrace of Iraq and immunity for his flouting of the law.
Likewise, there is a realistic understanding of Obama as politician. We know that he must do certain things in order to survive the caustic climate of government; that he must promise, cajole, threaten and perform, speak the lingua franca of American bureaucratic push me-pull me and that while his vision for America is virtually without fault, obviously he himself is not. But it is his humanity along with his and our acknowledgment of same which gives this movement any hope of success.

And although we have learned the hard way, having painfully witnessed BushCo's trampling of nations, with Obama we got damn lucky. And we'd better appreciate that lest this moment slip away and a long time passes before another one comes.

So it is now our duty as newly deputized agents of Change and Hope to protect this American movement with the fierce devotion of parents who have recovered their kidnapped child. The boogeymen had their way and now it's time to let them know unequivocally that it will not happen again.

It's good to be awake again.
